Organized By Atlantis Research
Participants 13 selected students
Highlight Mr. Subrato Chakraborty along with 13 selected students took part in the 19th Annual Asian Regional Space Settlement Design Competition. They had to design Arial the first settlement to be orbiting Luna. It was held between 28th January - 1st February 2023 at Amity University, Noida. The competition was organized in a hybrid mode this year, where teams from India and
Bhutan had participated offline and schools from China and Pakistan had participated in the online mode. Altogether, the competition consisted of 25 teams from all over Asia divided in 5 different companies. Team LSA was participating as a semi-finalist, one of the teams in the company, "Grumbo Aerospace". We worked alongside two schools from China, one school of Pakistani origin and one from India (Ahmedabad) itself. Similar to the previous rounds, this time as well, each company comprises of six different departments, namely; Structural Engineering, Operational Infrastructure; Automations, Human Factors along with Business Development and Cost & Scheduling. Each year the hosts of the Competition developed a new design concept with its own unique requirements, i.e., a Request for proposal. Our 40-page proposal had to cater to all these requirements in the most effective manner possible, while communicating with the different departments at the same time. In the Asian round of 2023, we designed "Arial", the first settlement to be orbiting Luna. We were provided a duration of 32 hours where we had to deduce a design, decipher it's requirements, create a concrete plan of action for our design and review it prior to submitting. To aid our progress throughout the competition, we attended informative technical sessions on engineering and management conducted by Anita Gale, Jack Gafford, Greg Autry and Leeloo M. Schindelhauer; i.e. the judges themselves! The next day to the deadline of submission, we had to provide a business presentation elaborating our proposal within 35 minutes after which the judges had a short questioning session clarifying doubts about the design. Subsequent to Greg Autry's excellent speech, the results were announced and Grumbo Aerospace had secured the runners-up position.
